No. 848 Geneva, 18 April 1995 CONCERNING: Implementation of Resolution Conf. 9.23 Mortality of Live Specimens During Transport 1.After consultation with the Chairman of the Animals Committee, the Secretariat wishes to stress to the Parties the importance of certain paragraphs of Resolution Conf.9.23 and to request their co-operation. 2.Paragraph j) of Resolution Conf. 9.23 recommends that "Parties maintain records of the number of live specimens per shipment and of mortalities in transport of species listed in the appendices, particularly birds, and note obvious causes of mortality, and that they publish these data annually, providing a copy to the Chairman of the Animals Committee". 3.Paragraph l) recommends that "on the basis of the information referred to in paragraph j), and information from scientists, veterinarians, zoological institutions and other experts, the Animals Committee, in co-operation with the Secretariat, make recommendations to the Parties designed to minimize mortality". 4. In order to formulate the recommendations referred to in paragraph 3 above, the Chairman of the Animals Committee and the Secretariat require the data referred to in paragraph 2. 5.To ensure that the data received are comparable, the Chairman of the Animals Committee and the CITES Secretariat recommend to the Parties the use of the enclosed form to collect data during inspections of shipments of live specimens, particularly birds, at the time of import and to form the basis for preparing reports to be sent to the CITES Secretariat every year.
