The International Consortium on Combating Wildlife Crime

ICCWC’s mission is to strengthen criminal justice systems and provide coordinated support at national, regional and international level to combat wildlife and forest crime

What is ICCWC?

The International Consortium on Combating Wildlife Crime (ICCWC) is the collaborative effort of five inter-governmental organizations working to bring coordinated support to the national wildlife law enforcement agencies and to the sub-regional and regional networks that, on a daily basis, act in defense of natural resources. The partner agencies to ICCWC are the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) Secretariat, INTERPOL, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the World Bank and the World Customs Organization (WCO). More on ICCWC partners here.

It is frontline officers from national agencies responsible for wildlife law enforcement and prosecuting authorities who bring criminals engaged in wildlife crime to justice, and ICCWC therefore works directly with these authorities to support them, by building long-term capacity and providing them with the tools, services and technical support they need to effectively combat wildlife and forest crime.
The five organizations comprising ICCWC have extensive experience in providing operational support, technical assistance, comprehensive training and capacity-building to law enforcement, prosecutorial and judicial authorities. Through their respective country or regional offices and bureaus, ICCWC partner agencies have access to an extensive global network that allows the Consortium to provide targeted support to national law enforcement agencies. In addition, ICCWC partner agencies offer state of the art globally mandated databases and secure communication channels, designed for use by law enforcement agencies. These enable real-time dissemination of law enforcement information and intelligence to assist national enforcement agencies in their risk-assessment, targeting and profiling activities and to facilitate and support investigations in different countries.  ICCWC partner agencies further offer substantial experience in coordinating multi-national operations targeting illegal trade and smuggling at regional and global levels.
