Review of Significant Trade in Queen Conch (Strombus gigas) 2003-2005 (Phase V)

Based on an expert study the Animals Committee at its 19th meeting (AC 19, 2003, Geneva, see AC19 Doc. 8.3. Annex) range  States  of Strombus  giga were divided into three categories:

  • Category (i) - ‘species of urgent concern’

Dominican Republic; Haiti; Honduras

  • Category (ii) – ‘species of possible concern’

Antigua and Barbuda*; Barbados*;Bahamas; Belize; Colombia; Cuba; Dominica*; Grenada; Nicaragua; Saint Kitts and Nevis; Saint Lucia; Saint Vincent and the Grenadines; Trinidad and Tobago*

(asterisk indicate that a previous suspension from the 1995 Review was still in place)

  • Category (iii) – ‘species of least concern’

Anguilla, Aruba, Bermuda, Brazil, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Costa Rica, France (including Guadeloupe and Martinique), Guatemala, Jamaica, Mexico, Montserrat, the Netherlands Antilles, Panama, Turks and Caicos Islands, United States of America (including Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands) and Venezuela.

Short and long-term actions for Range states in Category (i) and (ii) were outlined, while range states in Category (iii) were removed from the review (See AC 19 WG03, as amended by AC 19 Summary Record. See also Annex of SC54 Doc. 42).

  • Notification No. 2003/057 issued: Trade suspension remain for Dominican Republic, Haiti and Honduras
  • After the September 2005 deadline (for long term actions) the Secretariat, in consultation with the Chairperson of the Animals Committee, determined that 14 of the range States concerned had implemented the recommendations (AC22, 2006, Lima, see AC22 Doc. 10.1)
  • Notification No. 2006/034 issued: Trade suspensions remain for Grenada and Haiti.
  • In subsequent Reviews of Standing Committee recommendations to suspend trade made more than two years ago (see e.g. SC 54 Doc. 42SC58 Doc. 21.3SC62 Doc. 27.2SC66 Doc. 31.2): Trade suspensions remain for Grenada and Haiti.
