Notification to the Parties

CONCERNING:

CITES Management Authorities and ICPO-Interpol

1. In November 1988, the Secretariat distributed with Notification to the Parties No. 508 a handbook providing guidance for Management Authorities when collaborating with ICPO-Interpol.

2. The text of an updated version of the handbook, entitled 'Practical Guide', was prepared by the Interpol Working Group on Wildlife Crime in 1999 and it has recently been published in the three working languages of the Convention. A copy of the guide is being sent herewith to Parties only. It should be noted that the number of Parties to the Convention has increased since the text was prepared.

3. The importance of collaboration between CITES Management Authorities, the CITES Secretariat and ICPO-Interpol has been stressed at several meetings of the Conference of the Parties. The Secretariat believes that the enclosed publication provides useful information that will enable such collaboration to take place in an efficient and practical manner. Management Authorities are encouraged to develop working relationships with the National Central Bureau of Interpol in their country, which will also have received a copy of the guide.
