Notification to the Parties

No. 1998/54 Geneva, 2 October 1998

CONCERNING:

Disposal of Confiscated Live Specimens

1. Resolution Conf. 10.7 offers advice to Management Authorities on the disposal of confiscated live specimens. Annex 3 of this Resolution provides guidelines for the development of an action plan on seized and/or confiscated live specimens.

2. In paragraph 4 of Annex 3, it is recommended that an action plan should "identify which authority in the country of origin listed in the CITES Directory should be contacted in the event that live specimens are seized. This authority should be annotated in the CITES Directory."

3. In paragraph 9 of Annex 3, it is recommended that an action plan should "identify approved facilities and programmes located within the country that have agreed to provide adequate care, including veterinary or phytosanitary care, and that are willing to accept confiscated live specimens of particular taxa. Parties should prepare a list of such facilities and programmes, which should be submitted to the Secretariat, which will make it available to the Parties on request."

4. The Secretariat wishes to remind the Parties of the two recommendations above and to encourage them to provide the information required for the CITES Directory and the lists of facilities and programmes.
