Notification to the PartiesNo. 1998/44 Geneva, 6 August 1998
CONCERNING:
Illegal Killing of Elephants
1. At its 40th meeting (3-6 March 1998, London, United Kingdom) the Standing Committee decided that the Secretariat should initiate work to verify reports of illegal killing of elephants through consultations with national authorities, and report to the 41st meeting of the Standing Committee. This is pursuant to Resolution Conf. 10.10. As there appears to be widespread misinformation on this issue, the Secretariat will regularly inform the Parties of the result of its inquiries in Notifications to the Parties.2. The Secretariat has, to date, started verification work on three separate reports that it has been informed of.
3. The first of these related to a press report of six elephants having been killed in Samburu, Kenya, in February 1998. The Kenya Wildlife Service confirmed this incident. They also pointed out that in 1997 eight elephants were killed during January and February, whilst six were killed during the same period in 1998.
4. The Secretariat will advise Parties of the results of other verification work as it is completed.
