Control of Operations Breeding Appendix-I Species in Captivity

(continuation)

1. This Notification is a continuation of Notification to the Parties No. 981 of 2 June 1997. The attached information concerning operations in Honduras, Malaysia and Singapore should be included in the Register of Operations that Breed Specimens of Species Included in Appendix I in Captivity for Commercial Purposes.

2. The new operation in Honduras was approved by the Conference of the Parties at its 10th meeting.

3. Please take note that in Notification to the Parties No. 981 the name of THAILAND was inadvertently omitted before "Registration No.: A-TH-507".

Notes: 1. Specimens bred in operations listed in this Register may be entitled to the exemption provided by Article VII, paragraph 4, of the Convention.
2. Parties are invited to reject any document granted under Article VII, paragraph 4, of the Convention, if the specimens concerned do not originate from an operation listed in this Register and/or from a species which has not been declared as bred in captivity by a registered operation.

Remarks: All animals are marked by scale cutting on their tails and are tagged with different colours. The CITES Management Authority establishes an inventory in November each year.

Origin of stock: The breeding stock was obtained locally.

Type of specimen exported: Skins, meat and live specimens will be exported.

Marking of specimens: All specimens will be marked in accordance with CITES regulations.

Production of F2 offspring: Not yet.

MALAYSIA

Species bred: Scleropages formosus.

Current stock: Parental stock: 35 specimens acquired from different farms.

F1 breeding stock: 267 specimens

Annual production: The farm currently has a production capacity of about 1,000 offspring a year.

Remarks:

Origin of stock: Initially the breeding stock was obtained locally from the wild. It has been supplemented from other farms/aquaria.

Type of specimen exported: The red and gold varieties of S. formosus.

Marking of specimens: All specimens are marked using Passive Integrated Transponders (PIT) programmed with an identification code.

Production of F2 offspring: Yes. A limited number of F2 stock has been maintained to observe signs of possible inbreeding.

Annual production: 99 offspring (May 1997). The existing breeding population is expected to produce a total of 1,600 offspring a year.

Remarks:

Origin of stock: Wild and F2 specimens acquired locally

Type of specimen exported: Two varieties of Scleropages formosus will be exported.

Marking of specimens: The breeding stock and offspring will be marked using Passive Integrated Transponders (coded microchips).

Production of F2 offspring: 1,000 F2 offspring are expected to have been produced by the end of 1997.
