Notification to the Parties
No. 967 Geneva, 7 March 1997
CONCERNING:
Memorandum of Understanding Between WCO and the CITES Secretariat
1. In accordance with Resolution Conf. 9.8, the Secretariat has discussed with the World Customs Organization (WCO) the best way to improve co-operation between the two organizations. With this aim in mind a Memorandum of Understanding has been prepared and it has been approved by the Enforcement Committee and the Council of WCO.
2. On 4 July 1996, the Secretaries General of WCO and CITES signed the English and French versions of the Memorandum of Understanding in Brussels. A copy of the English version is attached to this Notification.
3. The Secretariat is also pleased to inform the Parties that WCO has created a working group on CITES matters.
4. The Secretariat recommends to all Management Authorities to communicate this Notification to their national Customs authorities and to discuss the best way to develop co-operation between Management Authorities and Customs services at the national level.
Note: The original (distributed on 7 March 1997) incorrectly referred to Conf. 9.9 in paragraph 1, instead of Conf. 9.8.
